The plot With a 200th anniversary parade coming up, Gotham City is at the mercy of Carl Grissom, the major gangster. Despite the best efforts of district attorney Harvey Dent and police commissioner James Gordon, the police remain corrupted. Reporter Alexander Knox and journalist Vicki Vale begin investigating the truth behind the rumors of a shadowy brave figure dressed as a bat, who has been terrifying criminals in the city. Vale and Knox are at a benefit at the mansion of the very rich Bruce Wayne, who falls in love with Vicki. That night, Grissom's deputy, Jack Napier, raids a chemical factory. When the police arrive, Napier realizes he's been set-up by his boss, angered by his affair with Grissom's mistress. In the middle of the shoot-out, Batman arrives and Napier falls into a vat of toxic waste. He doesn’t die, but his body is deformed by chemical scarring that leaves his face frozen in a permanent smile. He becomes The Joker After killing Grissom, The Joker takes over Gotham City. Batman, who shown to be Bruce Wayne, is on The Joker’s tail, who has also fallen for Vicki It becomes clear that Napier killed Bruce's parents a log time ago. Then The Joker holds a parade right into the city, luring people on to its streets by giving money away, but intending to kill the people with deadly gas. Batman foils his plan, but The Joker kidnaps Vicki and takes her to the top of the Cathedral. After a fight with Batman, The Joker falls from the top and appears to be dead. When police surround the Joker's body, they hear a sound of laughing. At the of the film, the Commissioner tells the citzens of Gotham that Batman will help them whenever danger is present.
Cast
The star of the film is a wild Jack Nicholson as The Joker. With his diabolical grin he steals the show. Michael Keaton is Batman and Kim Basinger plays Vicky Vale.
Prizes and Reviews The film by Tim Burton was a worldwide box-office hit, but got no major prizes. Nevertheless, he was especially praised for its appearance and it is now considered a milestone when filming comics. The Batman fans were excited because the film was in the gloomy mood of the comics and Batman character wasn’t made a joke of. The great success of the filming provided enough reasons for various sequels.
